SEVENTEEN

MAY 22, 2009 – HARTFIELD, MICHIGAN

After the thousandth photo, Caleb was convinced he was going to go blind from the flash, but he couldn’t stop the perma-grin on his face. Hell, yes. It was senior prom. He was going with his best friends. And he had a guy. Even if he and Nathan couldn’t be together openly, the thought of seeing Nathan in a tux, stealing a kiss, pretending for a moment like they were a normal couple like any other was enough.

“Mom, Mom, that’s enough,” Caleb said with a laugh. “Come on, we’ve gotta go.”

“Just two more,” she said with a big grin. “Come on. My baby only goes to prom once.”

“I went last year too!”

“Oh, just humor me.”

“Fine.” Caleb rolled his eyes, but he dutifully draped his arm around Robbie’s shoulder, and he rested his hand on Allison’s waist.

“Okay, everyone, say cheese!” Mrs. Stockwell called out.

“Cheese!” they chorused.

After half a dozen more pictures, Caleb finally called a halt to it. “I’m cutting you off now, Mom.”

“Have fun tonight.” She fussed over him, smoothing down the lapels of his tux and straightening his boutonniere. “You look very handsome, by the way.”

“Thanks, Mom.”

“You’re in a weirdly good mood,” Robbie said half an hour later as they walked into the banquet hall. “Like … suspiciously so.”

“I’m having fun with you guys!” Caleb protested.

“Yeah, okay.” Robbie snorted. “You’ve been acting weird as hell for a while now. Keep your secrets, man.”

Thankfully, a whole horde of their drama club friends descended on them, and Caleb was spared from having to come up with a reply. He did feel a little guilty about not telling his friends what was going on with Nathan. But he had to protect Nathan. That was what mattered most.

Prom was as cheesy as it had been the year before, with badly DJ’d music, girls in trashy dresses, and guys trying to look cool in their penguin suits, but Caleb couldn’t suppress the thrills of excitement that went through him periodically. Even if the chicken was rubbery and the under the sea theme clashed horribly with the dated decor of the banquet hall, he was at prom, and Nathan was somewhere waiting for him. Although, Caleb had yet to see him.

Caleb fiddled with the fork, squishing the leftover bits of bland red velvet cake from dessert. Allison bounced up to the table, laughing and dragging Robbie behind her, both of them flushed from dancing.

“You want a turn on the dance floor?” Robbie asked. “She’s wearing me out.”

Although the three of them had all come together as friends, and Caleb liked dancing, he’d noticed Allison couldn’t take her eyes off Robbie tonight. And he couldn’t take his eyes off her. Caleb figured he’d give them their space. It would be funny if his two best friends hooked up but kind of nice too. They’d be good for each other. “Nah, I’m cool.”

Besides, he’d didn’t want to miss the text from Nathan. He was surprised he hadn’t heard from Nathan yet. “Actually, I have to pee.
